This one-day introductory workshop led by artist and quilt instructor Patricia Grice leads you through the traditional process of Kawandi quilt-making. In this hands-on session participants will explore the hand-stitched practice rooted in African and Indian textile traditions.

Using layered fabric scraps, participants will learn foundational Kawandi techniques while engaging in mindful and sustainable handwork.

This program also celebrates three new pictorial quilts on view this summer previously part of the exhibition “Black Pioneers: Legacy in the American West”. Participants are encouraged to visit the galleries to draw inspiration from these works and to consider quilting as both artistic expression and cultural storytelling.

Join us for a day of creativity, connection, and discovery as we stitch together past and present through the art of quilting. This workshop will teach you the basic quilting steps including fabric selections, measuring and cutting, hand stitching, and finishing techniques. The workshop is suitable for beginners and experienced makers alike.

Workshop fee includes materials and museum admission. Space is limited; advance registration required. Please bring your own lunch. Coffee, tea and water provided.

James Museum program and event tickets, excluding Jamboree, are refundable up to 48 hours before the event, non-refundable within 48 hours or after, and transferrable; for assistance, contact info@thejamesmuseum.org.
