Experience the bold beauty of the Southwest through watercolor in this hands-on workshop inspired by the stunning landscapes of artist Ed Mell. Known for his dramatic use of light, shadow, and angular forms, Mell transformed the desert into powerful compositions that celebrate both its rugged beauty and delicate details.

The day begins with a guided visit to our spotlight exhibition, “Ed Mell: Legacy in Light” in the Frontier Gallery, where you’ll explore the artist’s unique approach to color, light, and composition. Back in the studio, teaching artist Linda Griffin will guide you step by step in creating a luminous watercolor painting of a cactus blossom, drawing inspiration from Mell’s distinctive style while developing your own artistic voice.

Before the workshop, participants are encouraged to bring a reference photo of a cactus blossom—either one you’ve taken yourself or one you’ve found online. If you’d like, you may sketch your composition in advance, or you can select a reference image and begin your drawing during class. All materials are provided. All skill levels are welcome, and no previous watercolor experience is necessary.

Workshop fee includes materials and museum admission. Space is limited; advance registration required. Please bring your own lunch. Coffee, tea and water provided.
