Harvey House restaurants and hotels sprung up along the tracks of the Santa Fe railway as it expanded westward. To staff them, Fred Harvey recruited adventurous young women as waitresses, eager to escape the confines of farm life and parental control. He trained, housed, and supervised them and made their long workdays seem glamorous. Many never left the West. Lesley Poling-Kempes uses interviews, historical research and photographs to help re-create the Harvey Girl experience.

Space is limited; advanced registration required.
