Willa Cather blazed a literary trail with her stunning descriptions of the western landscape and people who made it their home. This novel is based on real missionaries who carried their Catholic faith to the pueblos of New Mexico in the 1800s. Published in 1927, it was named one of Modern Library’s Best 100 Novels of the 20th century.
